People with a second income or a part-time job as a student may have to pay tax on their income. Submitting a tax return for the past calendar year may even be mandatory. What do people with a part-time job have to look out for in the 2020 tax return?
The types of mini-jobs are the Best Part Time Jobs
A side job is not a side job. A fundamental distinction must be made between two different types. There is the so-called 450-euro job, in which the employee may not exceed a fixed salary limit. There is also so-called short-term employment, in which a set time limit for the performance of the activity is not exceeded.
Specific regulations apply to both types of secondary employment. They are relevant for the declaration of income in the tax return 2020. Depending on the type of taxation, it also depends on whether the revenue was generated in the commercial sector or a private household.
Tax peculiarities for the 450-euro job
Income from a 450 euro job does not have to be taxed at a flat rate. If the average earnings are 450 euros, there are no taxes or social security contributions to be paid. They are compensated with the taxes for the main compulsory activity. However, if an employee generates income from a 450-euro job, for example, through investment income, this income is taxable.
Tax specials for short-term mini-jobs
The amount of income for tax liability is irrelevant for a short mini job. This form of part-time work means that employees can earn unlimited money without becoming subject to social security. Provided that the activity is limited to a specific period before admission.
Two deadlines are relevant for the 2020 tax return. There are three months if the activity is carried out on at least five days a week. The second period is 70 days if the weekly working hours are less and the work is less than five days of the week.
Information in the tax return 2020
Regardless of the type of part-time job and the income earned, the job must be declared in the 2020 tax return. All employees are obliged to provide truthful information in the income tax return. Tax deductions are not expected if the deadlines are met. The employer pays a flat tax rate of two per cent for the pension insurance.
Particularities with higher income
If an employee earns more than 450 euros, tax exemption may not apply. This is especially true if revenue is generated from two secondary jobs. In this case, taxes must be ceded to the tax office based on the amount of income.
The so-called sliding zone rule determines the amount of taxes. With an income between 450.01 and 1,300 euros, the contribution rate for social security increases with the number of wages. In the summer of 2019, the amount was raised from 850 euros to 1,300 euros. The new regulation takes effect for the first time in the 2020 tax return. The employer immediately pays the full contribution rate on earnings of more than 450 euros.
Since basically, all income of a private person is to be stated in a tax return, things like a jackpot profit are also included here. Even if the profit is initially tax-free, it should be noted that if this profit is used to generate other income, it must be taxed.

Tax treatment of short-term, part-time jobs
As already mentioned, the limit of 450 or 1,300 euros does not apply to temporary employment. Therefore, this income cannot be taxed at a flat rate of 2%. The legislator provides for a flat tax rate of 25% for high income from short-term employment. In addition to the income tax, the solidarity surcharge and church tax are also payable. The flat-rate wage tax of 25% is retained in any case. It applies if the activity is required on 18 consecutive working days, and the average wage is less than 62 euros per day. In these cases, hourly wages should not exceed 12 euros an hour.
